To highlight our campaign we decided to travel to the frontline of global warming to launch the Nuclear Cool hot air balloon.

The town of Longyearbyen on the remote island of Svalbard , in the Arctic Circle, is the last post of civilization in the northern hemisphere and the first place to feel the affects of rising temperature.

The effects of global warming on the island are profound and this year all the winter sea ice has melted around the island.

The great glaciers and ice straights are melting and threatening the rest of the world. Wildlife is in peril. The clock that runs the natural world there is ticking faster than ever.

We decided to take the balloon to the high Arctic as it highlights so graphically the man made damage we are causing.

The balloon is to be flown from the heart of the island along side the melting glacier and reached by trekking across the ice by sled through the arctic wilderness. In these freezing temperatures and with restricted fuel the flight duration is limited to an hour.

The Arctic team comprises of Paul Lavelle, two local guides (one is called "The Stig") a very experienced adventure cameraman Steve Ryder, and a film maker Tim Russon.

Twenty years ago Nuclear Cool's Paul Lavelle was the first man to achieve lift off in a balloon from the North Pole now he's hoping some real hot air will help fight the war against global warming.
